Instagram & Facebook to Flood You With Ads Based on Your AI Chats From December 16

2 Min Read

Get ready — your chats with Meta’s AI assistant are about to influence the ads and posts you see across Instagram, Facebook, and other Meta platforms.

Meta has announced that starting December 16, it will begin using data from your conversations with its AI chatbot to serve “more relevant” ads and content recommendations. Ahead of this rollout, users will start receiving notifications from October 7 through in-app messages and emails, explaining how the system works and what controls are available.

How It Will Work

According to Meta, interactions with the AI—whether voice or text—will shape what shows up in your feed. For example, if you chat with Meta AI about hiking, Instagram might start suggesting hiking groups, showing your friends’ trail posts, or even slipping in ads for hiking boots.

This applies across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Threads, and other Meta-owned apps, as long as the accounts are linked in your Accounts Centre. If you haven’t connected an account (like WhatsApp), its data won’t be used.

What About Sensitive Topics?

Meta says it won’t use AI conversations around topics like religion, politics, health, race, sexuality, or trade unions for advertising purposes. However, the company didn’t clarify whether this sensitive data will also be excluded from general content recommendations, such as posts and reels.

You’ll Still Have Some Control

The tech giant claims users will remain “in control.” Through Ads Preferences and other feed tools, people can adjust what kind of ads and content they want to see—or block certain categories entirely.

The Bigger Picture

Meta insists this move will help improve user experience by surfacing content people are genuinely interested in. But the shift also shows how deeply integrated AI is becoming in shaping our digital lives.

So starting December, don’t be surprised if your casual chat with Meta AI about cooking, travel, or fitness suddenly transforms your feed into a personalized shopping and content spree.
